With the first week of school just around the corner, let’s talk about setting goals for the new school year.
Whether you have been back in the classroom for a few weeks or just about to start you can still set up goals to have a successful school year. Having clear expectations and goals not only holds us accountable but will help us have a more clear idea of how we want our year to go. And by mean go, what we are and are not willing to do.
We will all be planning out lessons, trying to get to know our students, set up our classroom rules/ procedures, review with our students to see what content they have mastered already and on top of that… all the other pesky business that comes with the start of a new school year.
So to start things off right, lets set some goals for the year!
Here are some goal ideas for this upcoming school year:
- Set specific arrival and leave times (i.e. 30 minutes before work & no more than 1 hour after work).
- Take little to no school work home (i.e. use planning periods, lunch time and other free time wisely).
- Delete your school email off your phone (i.e. only be available during school hours, that way people will not expect you to be on at all times).
- Facilitate no more than 1 extra-curricular activity or club (i.e. this year I will only facilitate French Club).
- Say “No” to events or positions that do not compensate you for your time (i.e. no monetary compensation or time during the school day like an extra planning period, you should not be expected to do it).
- Once a month have a student/teacher work day (i.e. students can work on assignments to get caught up or extra credit, while you work on grading, planning, meeting with students, etc.).
- Hold students more accountable for their grades (i.e. use missing work slip, request to retest, etc.).
